Seal's Rest Cottage (1050)

Milbridge, ME

Situated right on Wallace Cove in Milbridge, the Seal's Rest Cottage gives you the opportunity to experience a classic Maine beach rental. This sweet cottage sits just feet from the beach and gives you the impression that you can just reach out the window and touch the sand.

If you want to step back from the hectic pace of life and just relax, then Seal's Rest is the place for you. This quaint, rustic cottage offers 4 bedrooms and 1 1/2 bathrooms to accommodate your family. There is a limit of 4 occupants in the rental, so everyone can have their own private space should they choose to.

On the main level of the cottage you will find the open concept kitchen/living room/dining area, two small bedrooms each with a twin bed, 1 ½ bathrooms and a game/puzzle room. Two separate second floor spaces house the master bedroom with a queen bed and a guest “bunk room” with a queen bed and 2 twin beds. Other amenities include a full kitchen with gas stove, refrigerator, microwave, dishes, pots and pans, etc. The cottage also comes equipped with satellite TV, a gas/propane outdoor grill, hammock, outdoor furniture, bed linens, blankets, and bath towels. There are no laundry facilities at this property, but there is a laundromat located right in town near the grocery store.

The central attraction to this property is the beach at Wallace Cove. The Seal's Rest Cottage was originally a small, rustic camp called "Kampenuf" that perched just above the beach. The original camp still stands and houses the living room, kitchen and dining area. Improvements and upgrades to the camp were added over the years to expand the living area and add bedrooms and bathrooms. The "Kampenuf" sign still remains posted over the door leading into the old camp. It serves as a reminder of days gone by and lets visitors know that this special place is "just enough" to help revive and refresh you.

With the beach just steps away, you will want to spend as much time as possible outside and enjoying the sand and water. There is a nice stone path that leads from the lawn area down to the beach. It’s an easy port for your kayaks and the beach is a wonderful launching area from which to explore the shore. If you don’t have your own kayaks, you can rent kayaks from Sunrise County Canoe & Kayak in Machias. They offer rentals (with delivery and pick up) and guided tours.

The little town of Milbridge is one of Downeast Maine’s undiscovered gems. Even though it is a small fishing village, Milbridge offers visitors just about everything one could need. Most of the town amenities are located right along Route 1, so they are easy to find. If you plan to cook meals for yourself, the Bayside Shop & Save offers a good variety of choices from fruits & vegetables, meats, breads and even wine, beer and liquor. There is also a weekly Farmer’s market that sets up in the grocery store parking lot for you to enjoy. Fresh Maine lobster, fish and clams can also be purchased in town at Chipman’s Wharf. Buy lobster fresh off the boat, take it home and cook it yourself. What could be better? On Friday nights throughout the summer, find your way to the town wharf to enjoy an evening of music. There’s something for everyone from classical to country.

If you want to give yourself a break from “kitchen duty”, there are several options in town as well. The Milbridge House offers breakfast and lunch, and 44 North caters to the lunch and dinner crowd. There is also Vasquez Take Out which provides authentic Mexican fare and is a “must visit” when in the area.

The Seal’s Rest Cottage is located in a good jumping off point for traveling south to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park or north to Lubec and Eastport. Renters will certainly want to plan some time in Maine’s famous Acadia National Park. There is so much to see and do whether you plan to hike, sea kayak, shop, eat popovers at The Jordan Pond House, or go on a whale watch. The possibilities are endless and the scenery never disappoints.

If you travel north to Lubec, be sure to carve out some time to visit the Easternmost Point in the US – West Quoddy Head Lighthouse. You can visit the museum at the lighthouse and go hiking on beautiful shorefront trails. If the border is open, you can also travel across the bridge to Campobello Island, Canada and tour the sights there. FDR’s summer home – Campobello – is located there. Tours of the cottage are well worth your time.

Washington and Hancock counties have some of the most beautiful hiking trails. Experienced and novice hikers alike can find something that works for them. A few of our favorites include the Bold Coast Trails in Cutler, Pigeon Hill in Steuben, Tunk Mountain in Franklin area, and Petit Manan Wildlife Preserve in Steuben. Check out options online at the Bureau of Public Lands or use the AllTrails app on your phone to locate many different options. The coastline is rugged, rocky, and unspoiled. There is so much to explore.

Artists and photographers will find a bounty of landscapes to capture. You can set up right next to the cottage and paint the ocean vista or travel about to find the perfect spot. Many visitors discover the Schoodic Peninsula in the Winter Harbor area and marvel at the rocky, granite shores and sandy beaches. Are you a plein air painter? The landscapes in the area will astound and delight you, and will stimulate your inner artist.

After a day of exploring, come back to the cottage and put your feet up. Whether you decide to sit and watch the sunset or relax and watch a movie, you will not be disappointed. The Seal’s Rest Cottage has something for everyone. Come see what this area has in store for you!

Continue your trek “down east” to Eastport to wander through galleries, fish for mackerel off the town pier, or take a whale watching cruise. Don’t forget to stop and sample some of the best lobster rolls around.

Acadia National Park is also a “must see” for guests to our area. Plan a day or a couple of day trips to witness this breathtaking park and the beautiful coastal town of Bar Harbor. You can take a kayak tour, hop on a whale watch tour, rent a bike or a stand up paddle board. We highly recommend getting yourself out on the water to witness the majesty of the Maine coast.

Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park are a 1 ½ hour drive from the cottage. Parking in town can be a challenge, so plan to arrive early before the choice spots are all taken.

Or try something a little different, and hop aboard the Winter Harbor Ferry. This passenger only ferry leaves from Winter Harbor and offers a short “cruise” to Bar Harbor. Disembark right in front of the Bar Harbor Inn and walk around the town, walk the shore path, eat lunch, and hop back on the ferry at the end of the day. It’s a wonderful way to experience the water and the Maine coast.

A full kitchen with stove, refrigerator, pots & pans, microwave, coffee maker, etc is at your disposal. Sorry, no dishwasher, but you will have a fabulous view while you do the dishes. There is also a TV with Firestick so you can access your Amazon Prime account and any streaming services you have through that.

Bring the books you’ve been meaning to read because this is the perfect spot to sit and relax. Or, If you are a budding artist, be sure to pack your art supplies. The rocky shoreline is waiting for you to capture in a painting. Set up your easel and let you inner John Marin shine through. Practice your art and capture the coastal vistas on canvas.

Keys to Maine Cottage (1052)

Milbridge, ME

Bedrooms: 3 / Bathrooms: 1.0 / Max People: 6
Area: Ocean Front, Water View, Water Access

Keys to Maine Cottage is a cozy 2 bed-1 bath cottage on a quiet camp road on a private peninsula with a view of Back Bay from the living room and kitchen! Nestled among balsam, pines, and white birch trees, this cozy retreat offers gorgeous views of the bay where eagles soar and seals visit and is situated so each glorious and breathtaking sunset is yours. This peace-filled getaway is only a few miles from town but feels like a million miles from anywhere.

Keys to Maine’s proximity to the ocean lends gracious views of the water. The main cottage is situated across the camp lane from the water. There is a waterfront fire pit area and Adirondack chairs located across the lane as well as a separate, guest bunk-house. Enjoy days or evenings at the fire pit reading, drawing, telling stories or just taking in the view. If you have invited a couple of friends for a visit, your extra guests can stay in the bunk-house. Electricity is provided in the bunk-house, but no water or plumbing.

The waterfront fire pit area is an enticing place to read, reflect, or relax with friends and family. Take in the sea breezes and view lobster boats in the distance. Back Bay’s circadian-like tides swing over 14 feet, their ebb and flow a great reminder of the sea’s power and delightful to watch. At low tide, when the mud flats are exposed, local wormers and clammers will venture out for a hard day’s work with skids in tow, a marvel worthy of respect at the Downeaster’s ingenuity.

When the sun leaves Keys to Maine aglow and its orange rays and dappled pinks bounce off her white birches, no one is left wanting. The moon will rise above the bay and thousands of seemingly touchable stars light the inky sky. Moreover, from time to time, the vaporous aurora borealis can be a special visitor.

The main cottage at Keys to Maine offers a queen bed in each of two bedrooms. The bunk-house provides two full sized beds. (Special note: the bunk house is not available for the 2025 season.) A fully functional & quaint kitchen with gas stove/oven and full size refrigerator opens to the living room where a large front window affords guests a gorgeous water view of the bay. The two bedrooms in the main cottage and the bunk-house allow two to three couples or a small family to enjoy Keys to Maine’s numerous amenities. A comfortable chair and two couches in the living room are nearly irresistible. The dining area in the kitchen offers water view and can seat 4 with ease. Additional amenities at Keys of Maine include Internet access, washer, dryer, Smart TV, and microwave.

Should you desire to venture into the village of Milbridge, there is a marvelous breakfast and fantastic Downeast food at the Milbridge House. Offering real blueberry pancakes (August is the Blueberry Festival in Machias 40 mins away) and mouthwatering homemade deserts (Chocolate cream, pumpkin, and lemon meringue pie are just a few) or if you get there after 10:45 fresh off the dock seafood - crab, lobster, and melt in your mouth scallops - are yours for a fair price. Hurry, though - these lovely women go home at 2pm and they are closed Mondays.

Lunch or dinner may be enjoyed at 44 North, directly across the road from the Milbridge House. Local Maine fare, and other yummy options are served here. Or sample some authentic Mexican food at Vazquez Take-Out, a popular spot for locals and visitors alike.
After you’re sated, walk over to the Milbridge Museum and Gallery just to view the really old days of Milbridge past. Or, ride your bikes to McClellan Park (about 4 miles from town center - Automobile Parking/Entry is free, bathrooms are available and camping has a nominal fee). Once there, you’ll walk through the dark balsam fragrant woods which open suddenly to wide vistas of open ocean and wave after wave of crashing salt sprays on deep pink granite crevices and mighty glacial bedrock.

If you have a craving for a sandy beach, bring your pail and shovel, hop in the car and drive to Corea about 30 minutes south in the town of Gouldsboro. Park along the street at your own risk as there is no real parking, but it’s a short walk to your sand filled destination.

While you are in Corea, check out Chapter Two, a” humbly sophisticated kick ass gallery” (their words but totally true) filled with amazing work from local artists. Rosemary’s rugs are delightful and Garry’s honed taste fills the place with never before seen treasures. PLUS, there is a fantastic used book barn out back where the prices are obscenely low and the eclectic choice makes picking phenomenal fun. (On the lone road into Corea, look up on the pole about midway for the mating-pair osprey nest :-)

When the beach and sand and sun have filled you to the brim, a few miles away the town of Winter Harbor has a sweet old fashioned “five and dime” hardware store. Bring the kids and rediscover what a tiny toy store should be. Games, books, Jacob’s Ladder, and of course kitchenware, hardware, newspapers etc. Next door, there is an antique store and some local artists works in shops across from the public library.

When leaving Gouldsboro, go by way of the Acadia National Park Schoodic Peninsula section. The Schoodic Peninsula is considered one of the most beautiful panoramic views of the sea, it is quintessential Maine and worth the trip. The 10 mile, one-way ring road boasts some of the most painted and photographed ocean views, and is a perfect biking trip as well. Park your vehicle at the Pickled Wrinkle in Birch Harbor and ride to the park’s entrance at the bottom of the hill and enjoy one of the most beautiful rides in America. When you’ve put your bikes back on the rack, go into the Pickled Wrinkle and have a cold one. Check out this hot spot, everything from pool tournaments, horseshoe tournaments, to jazz depending on the night.

Happily exhausted, drive the quiet Route 1 back to Milbridge and Keys to Maine Cottage. Make a note to stop at that little antique place on the right as you’re leaving Gouldsboro. It’s a tiny shop with a gregarious friendly owner and worth a browse of collectibles and vintage used Maine items. Note to self: make room for a wine tasting at The Bartlett Estate Winery, a bit tricky to find but worthy of your time.

Stop at the grocery store/hub of Milbridge - Bayside Market. Pick up ice, water, and food You can also buy wine, spirits, or beer here. The Bayside has everything (but the breakfast sandwiches, coffee, and cranberry orange muffins are to-die-for).

Now home at Keys to Maine, you’ll find a full size washer and dryer for your salty clothes and towels. Relax. Sit down with a book or draw in the sea air at the fire pit area across the lane. Decide that the smart TV and your favorite Netflix show can wait and watch the stars make their entrance. Enjoy now.

Bring your artistic self and find your muse in this delightful dwelling. We’re so glad to have you as our guests.
